Open House Bandit Nabbed

By robertearl | April 9, 2008

A women, posing as an interested homebuyer, has been walking straight into properties and robbing them. Who let this person in? A Realtor holding the house open in an attempt to “sell” the property. The would be “buyer” stole items including prescription drugs, jewelry and firearms, from four of the houses while real estate agents were elsewhere in the homes, law-enforcement officials said yesterday. (Details in washingtonpost.com)

Seller’s beware. We have heard of this “scam” going on for the entire time that we have been in real estate in Northern Virginia. Agents, with nothing better to do on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, kicks you out of the house for 3-4 hours and allows perfect strangers, that have not been financially pre-qualified or screened in any way shape or form, come into the sellers home and browse around. All while the agent is stuck standing in the kitchen or talking with someone else.

There are better ways to get a house sold.
